Just to let you know - it was the Kent lot who cleared the back field.

akv1976@yahoo.co.uk:
Hi All
UKUA Junior Outdoor Nationals 2008 took place in North Birmingham at the weekend, and was a success despite the rain and then wind that battered us over the 2 days. (If it's any consolation to those that were here, it has been fine and fairly still since you left - I think you bring the weather with you!) It was the biggest Junior Outdoor tournament in the UK yet, with 27 teams attending. The Junior game is expanding (in terms of number of teams and players), and improving (in terms of standard of play) month by month at the moment. This is shown not just in the total number of teams at the weekend, but fact that only one of the teams in the top 3 this year finished in the top 8 last year - indeed Kent didn't even have a Junior team to enter 12 months ago!
So 'Good Work!' to all the coaches and players who are working so hard with their teams to achieve this!
Huge thanks to all those that helped over the weekend - setting up, clearing up, getting water, Kev and Tom for the schedule, Gaynor Tracy and Claire for the catering, Sutton Rugby Club for the venue... and all of you who played for sorting out the litter before you left - when I went out onto the back field after the presentation it was spotless, and I've rarely seen that at a tournament. Thank you!
There is a fair bit of lost property which I will try and find the time to sort and catalogue tonight, and email out later on. On this subject, is the issue of discs - some people seem to think that a disc lying around at a tournament is fair game to pick up and take home. I know that 3 discs (one of which was meant for the MVP of the final) were taken from where my stuff was in the foyer, and a couple of other people have enquired about missing discs - and there are none in last property. Taking away a disc that isn't yours is stealing. Don't do it.
Here are the results. Teams were asked to give 3 Spirit votes, giving 3 points to one team, 2 to another, and 1 point to their third choice. In brackets after each team name is the number of Spirit votes they got. Every team got some votes, and a low number doesn't necessarily mean you are a poorly spirited team - every game might have been fantastic and you might have been everyone's fourth choice with little to choose between all the teams. But I think it is worth recognising and celebrating those teams that did rack up a number of points.

As y'all know I've been working on getting some publicity to swell our ranks with newbies. The plan is to put a push on school age type people who are just about to start their summer hols round about nowish. It's a good way for them to spend their summer, and ideal for getting them ready for next season. Kent Touch This under Mash's guidance will have a new influx in September/October and I've said we'd be happy to help where possible, including potential joint trainings (we could split up KTT/KO! for parts of the session - but more numbers has to be a good thing!). I'm going to come up with a plan to create a team at Christchurch Uni - plan unknown (and not sure how much commitment/resources/time this would involve).
Then the council rang me today - they are having a sports fair in August - details attached. I've provisionally booked us a space and a small pitch space down by the maze to have a display match and do small tester session. The Herne Bay one is a possibility only. More info to follow as and when.
I was rung up by Kent.tv the local internet TV station who are considering doing a thing on us for their show. i've highlighted all the relevant X factor characteristics of our players, the story of the club, the players, the juniors, the Mixed, the tour info etc... We'll see...
Flyers and posters will follow soon!

Hi
I'm from manchester uni and was wondering whether you were going to mixed tour 2.
There are 2 of us who live in Herne bay and are playing for manchester and we were wondering how you were travelling up North i.e whether we could bagsy a lift (we'ld obviously pay petrol money)
We were also wondering if it would be ok to come to your training sessions over summer?
Thanks
sarah
I mentioned this to some of you at training - here's the message from Dale (gb junior coach):
All,
the GB Junior Open squad have invested in a batch of unique Great Britain discs for sale over the next few weeks before we head out to grab some bling for the country! As I'm sure a lot of you can appreciate, travelling to Worlds is an expensive business, especially so for the Junior squads. The sale of these discs will provide much needed finances for a fantastic cause - many of these players come from underprivileged backgrounds and with your help, we can fulfill a dream that a lot of them have really struggled to make possible so far.
At £10 a disc, you'll be helping 21 kids travel out to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity in one of the hotbeds of world Ultimate.
So, loosen your purse strings and come and find me this weekend at Mixed Tour 1! I'll either be floating around the TD's area, watching Chevron/Cottonopoli s Kettle Club/Catch Those, or in the nearest cafe!
They're fantastic looking - adorning the GB logo you'll inevitabely have seen floating around by now and a link to our sponsor Ultimate Outreach, a Merseyside based Ultimate coaching company founded by several ex-Juniors who have been spreading our sport into schools, colleges and youth groups in the Merseyside area for over two years now.
I'll be at Mixed Tour 3 (Birmingham, 12/13 July) as well as Junior Outdoor Nationals (Sutton Coldfield, 21/22 June), don't miss out on this opportunity to not only own a great looking disc but support the development of our future superstars.
Dale Walker
GB Junior Open Coach
So yeah, he's got GB discs to sell for £10, which is a pretty good price for an ultrastar, and he can offload them to me at our next training session, so if anyone would like to buy one let me know on the forum and we can sort it out.

Hi All
If you might be interested in taking some time out to see another part of the world, meet some new people, and play/coach some Ultimate, please see the email below from my brother (who is playing for Chevron this year, and GB Open in Vancouver).
There is a chance he will come and do a presentation about it after the Saturday games have finished at Junior Nationals next weekend, he is just seeing if he can fit that into his schedule. Either way, if you might be interested, do get in touch with him.
And please pass this email to anyone you know if not on the Juniors eGroup but who might be interested.
Cheers

Subject: Ultimate Frisbee Coaching in South Africa - Gap Years, Summer Holidays and Career Breaks
Hi there,
I work for GAP SPORTS and since starting with them in September I have set up an Ultimate Frisbee Coaching placement in South Africa which I thought might interest a number of people – either for a Gap Year, summer holiday or career breaks.
At the moment we run masses of sports coaching placements (swimming, football, tennis, hockey, netball, basketball etc) in schools/teams in Port Elizabeth , South Africa . Volunteers come away with us for 4-16 weeks, they live with fellow Gap Sporters (who are doing various other sports and non-sports placements) and each day they go off to the different schools to teach the kids there. You do not need to be an expert or have any official qualification to coach; you just need to have a love for your sport, lots of enthusiasm, a basic knowledge of the game and a passion to share it with those less fortunate (obviously if you have done the UKUA coaching programme that is only going to stand you in good stead). The minimum age for our volunteers is 18 years old and we take people, as mentioned above, on Gap Years, summer holidays and career breaks. We also run non-sports placements like teaching, art and design, care-work in orphanages etc and people can do a mixture of sport and non-sport placements if they like. Trips costs £1195 for 4 weeks and an extra £100 per week after that.
So if you are a keen Ultimate Frisbee player, why not spend some time teaching the sport to young athletes from South African townships? Although the South African Flying Disc Association (SAFDA) has been around for over 20 years, Ultimate Frisbee is still very underdeveloped in South Africa . This placement therefore requires enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers who can be proactive at the grassroots end of the game. You will work with pupils of all ages and genders and your role will be to introduce and promote the sport to them.
We are just up-dating our brochure and website at the moment and so the placement will go up there very soon but to get a feel for what the placement will look like go to the two links below:

Hi all,
Alicia got confirmation this week that her phd application at AUT (in NZ) has been approved. We'll be heading back to NZ at the end of the school year. This wasn't unexpected but I had still been kidding myself that I wouldn't have to leave KO! I'm stoked that Alicia has this opportunity but will miss all you guys loads.
I feel really lucky to have played two awesome seasons with such a great bunch of people and will be doing all I can to stay in touch. I've learnt so much from KO I fully intend to rebuild Hamilton ultimate in the model of KO! On the bright side, I received word that my phd scholarship to research alternative sports (ultimate) will probably be approved. I'm hoping to use KO! as part of my research, although I'm not sure how just yet.
Anyway, as a tribute to the youth of England, who I have toiled with in my profession, we are holding a chavvie farewell party. on the 19th of July. All KO! are welcome, details below (shamelessly copied from my facebook invite):
Word up Bitches! Yea Boi!
Is you phat enuf to come to our well good parti?
Nik sum stella or scrumpy and chor a sun for the train ride to cantabry. We havn da dopest summa/levin parti eva!!
Its gonna be da bomb, dont turn up minging, be wearing that velour and bling so you fit in. Chavvies mak sure yor trainers are wite. Chavettes make sure yor lookin tight.

If you think Sitinborns jank put yor hands up
If you think workins for chumps put yor hands up
If you think BNP rocks put yo hand up
Translation for the literate (provided by babelfish.com):
Alicia and Hamish are holding a farewell party as they are are soon to leave English shores for the Antipodes. Dress code is strictly is chav. Byo acohol, nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks provided.

Hi all.
The first thing is to announce some very bad news. We are only on the waiting list for Mixed Tour (we're 44 for a tournament stretched to 40 teams). I've been onto Brighton who are organising, and to the UKUA scheduler to complain. The dealio was this: there was an email on Britdisc saying we had until May 30 to get cheques in. Because our club accounts are tight, what with paying for kit, we didn't get a cheque out early enough. This is entirely my fault (I should have written a cheque from my own account at the very least - I just didn't realise the hurry) and I am doing everything I can to sneak in - they're aware that we can be available at last minute so please keep the weekend free - even if we don't end up playing I'll organise something entertaining and challenging for that weekend. I'm also going to try bribing teams which have two teams to see if we can buy their space (particularly if they're short of players). On this note it is possible that the women (and men) can still pick up for other teams if they wish, but I'd like us all to assume that we're still going right up to the day, in case events change.
This is not the first time that i've sent a cheque out very late. Since I try my best and still fucked up I'm going to suggest that going forward responsibility for ensuring entry into tournaments should now come from whoever is Captain for that tournament. Up until now it has been my job to do this, but I'm clearly rubbish at it. The Captain will need to chase a club signee for a cheque (Me, Sprocket, Biscuit and Pete can sign), as well as ringing around players to ensure we have enough people (this had been done admirably this season by both Kate and Sprocket). I also think the Captain should take the responsibility for accommodation and transport, even if that means delegating the job to someone else (e.g. Me) - I appreciate this can be a lot to do and may need the job shared. Thoughts?
We need to make changes about the way things are sorted, because I am awful at the bureaucratic things and we need to ensure this never happens again. We need a system. Or something.
Which may raise the question of what's the point of me as President. Well here's what I'm working on at the moment:
*Get our Junior team ready for Nationals
*Use Nationals as an opportunity to promote Ultimate to juniors. (This is essential - this is not just a Whippet Whim, new juniors will be the lifeblood of the team next season when our old Juniors and KTT students leave).
*Get Poster and Flyers sorted for promoting KO!. These cost between £75 and £100 to produce 200 colour A3 posters and 600 A6 flyers.
*A proposal for getting sponsorship from Jazz apples and KM. We have a slim chance at getting something, but it's worthwhile as an exercise - we can use the proposal for future sponsorship bids.
I am conscious that with my role as GB Jr Coach some of my attention has been taken away from the club, but please rest assured that my focus is and always will be KENT!
Please accept my apologies on the Mixed Tour One front. I am truly gutted, disappointed and am trying my best to make up for it.
Sorry.

OK, so I've been busy today on the development co-ordination, which is another reason why it smarts so much that we're on some poxxy waiting list!
JUNIORS
I've been in touch with every Head of PE in Canterbury to see if they would be interest in sending a team to junior nationals. I'm realistic that many won't have the time or interest. St Eds has a sports day on 21st and 22nd June (nationals). Simon Langton's Head of PE Mr Green said he supported the idea and suggested I speak to Dan. Dan is a GTP student so can't take a team on his own. So I left a message on Mr Holloway's voicemail and caught Mr Butler coming out of the Cathedral - Darren Butler seems interested - he even seem a little ashamed that he hadn't developed his team this year but said he'd had a horrible year (there's a lot of it going around - even my Mum says teaching is too much hard work!) but said he'd definitely be keen to get something proper going in September. Can I urge anyone who has contacts with Langton players to help Dan out. Even if Dan is unable to afford the time off work (bloody schools) we should still push for a team. Still waiting for a response from several others, but all say we can leave posters and flyers. I'm still designing one. If anyone has a good effort we'll use that. I guess I'm asking to see what support I have on this. It's been a while since we really went out of our way to seek new players. I think we should jump on the momentum Dan has started with his newbies. Sam - can you bring Greg to training? Neo said he'd come if Michael Joyce gave him back his Warning! Useless if dropped! disc. If anyone knows anyone who might be interested in coming along, give them a flyer or something! Nice work to J for getting some sort of Gymnast to come soon. Let's really emphasise Tuesday as beginners night, but that they're welcome to all trainings. It's nice having sevens, even if there are some weaker players.

Hello KO!
I'll keep this short and sweet (or most probably not). I'm going to step down from the social sec position. This is because i'm going travelling to the USA next month, for a month...as well as this i've accepted a job in Birmingham, so i'll be moving back there in mid-August. It hasnt really worked out as I planned but I feel you need someone whose more involved with things to handle this area of the club - unfortunately I missed all the tour events due to work and it's hard to get involved and organise things when you arent in the thick of it.
Anyway, i'll still be playing for KO! Even when I move to Birmingham, hopefully in the fun tournaments and if you need players for KO2 for example as i'll be at work mon-fri. Dont really intend on joining any other teams you see - IM LOYAL! Also you can stay at mine for Great Barr(if I can play of course

)
Anyway, I dont know how it'll work now, but I guess someone will take over and good luck to them!
